The first records of this mineral are dated back to 1765, but it received its current name only in 1985. It is a conglomerate of calcite, marble, pyrite, and fragments of ammonites and other ancient sea life forms. It was mostly formed in the Cretaceous period, 95-65 million years ago. Its hardness is 3.5 – 4.5. The color is caused mostly by the presence of iron or manganese.
