AMAZONITE

Amazonite is a green variety of microcline feldspar. Its chemical formula is KAlSi3O8, hardness 6 – 6.5, and specific gravity 2.55 to 2.57. This mineral got its name from the Amazon River, from which certain green stones were formerly obtained, but it is doubtful whether green feldspar occurs in the Amazon area.

Sometimes amazonite forms beautiful crystals, but they are very rare. Large high-quality crystals come from the area of Miass in the Ilmensky Mountains, Russia, and from Pike’s Peak in Colorado. There are also a few other locations for Amazonite which include Crystal Park, El Paso County, Colorado and Morefield Mine in Amelia, Virginia. Amazonite of very good, bright green-to-blue color comes from Kola Peninsula, Russia. Amazonite is also mined in Brazil and Peru.

Amazonite is said to be the stone of truth, honor, communication, integrity, hope, and trust. It is believed to enhance intuition, psychic powers, creativity, intellect, and psychic ability. Amazonite is often associated with the throat chakra, and as such, said to be beneficial to communication. It is also associated strongly with the third eye chakra. It is said to align the physical and astral bodies. It is noted mystically to lessen stress and self-defeating behaviors by calming and building self-esteem.
